Regional Police Chief Increases Road Safety Vigilance During 2026 Eid Holiday Travel Amidst Poor Road Conditions in Yogyakarta
YOGYAKARTA — Several provincial road sections in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) remain problematic. The DIY Regional Government has identified approximately 270 kilometres of provincial roads in substandard condition out of the total provincial road network spanning 678 kilometres. Some sections exhibit severe damage including potholes and undulating surfaces that potentially endanger road users, particularly during periods of increased vehicle traffic such as the annual Eid holiday exodus.
This situation has prompted law enforcement to prepare enhanced security measures at vulnerable locations to prevent traffic accidents. Regional Police Chief Irjen Pol Anggoro Sukartono stated that his office had received reports regarding these conditions and would intensify surveillance at areas deemed high-risk.
“We have already received information about potholes and undulating road surfaces from the Head of the Public Works Department. This information is important for us at the police service and for operational personnel at specific locations,” he said following a Forkopimda coordination meeting at the Yogyakarta Kepatihan Complex on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
Anggoro indicated that on road sections that cannot be rapidly repaired, police would deploy additional personnel to anticipate potential accidents. “For roads that cannot undergo immediate repairs, we will ensure coordination equipment and personnel readiness to secure the routes that have already been marked or anticipated, and this information will be conveyed to us,” he stated.
“We will monitor these areas twice as intensively as roads that are already designated surveillance hotspots,” Anggoro added.
