“During Ramadan, which recurs every year, there are always many disturbances to public order and security, including brawls and illegal racing. They were assigned to carry out patrols,”

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Police Commission (Kompolnas) is advocating for systematic and integrated communication regarding the alleged assault case involving Brimob officer Bripda MS against a teenager in Tual, Maluku.

Kompolnas Secretary Arief Wicaksono, in South Jakarta on Thursday, stated that in this case, the Brimob officer was actually carrying out his duty to maintain security.

“During Ramadan, which recurs every year, there are always many disturbances to public order and security, including brawls and illegal racing. They were assigned to carry out patrols,” he said.

He believes that in carrying out this task, there should have been coordination with other units, such as the traffic police unit, Sabhara (Special Mobile Brigade), and even with the Department of Transportation.

This coordination is intended, among other things, to equip officers with lighting, such as flashlights, given that the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.

Because there was no lighting preparation, Bripda MS used a tactical helmet to stop the victim who was riding a motorcycle.

“Because he didn’t bring a red flashlight, this motorcyclist also didn’t understand. So, in the end, the available tool was used, namely the helmet, which was the most suitable for stopping the motorcyclist. Unbeknownst to him, the consequences were fatal,” he said.

Therefore, he encourages integrated communication by field commanders to prevent this incident from happening again.

It is known that the Maluku Police officially dismissed Bripda MS (Mesias Viktor Siahaya), a Brimob officer who is a suspect in the alleged assault case against a student in Tual, resulting in the student’s death.

Bripda MS was found to have committed a reprehensible act and violated the Code of Ethics of the Indonesian Police.

However, Bripda MS is still considering the panel’s decision and has been given time to file an appeal.

Based on the chronology provided by the police, the incident began when a Brimob patrol carried out a security operation using tactical vehicles in the Tual City and Southeast Maluku Regency areas on Thursday (February 19) early in the morning.

The patrol initially was in the Mangga Dua Complex, Langgur, until around 02:00 WIT. Then, it moved to Fiditan Village, Tual City, after receiving reports from residents regarding an alleged assault in the Tete Pancing area.

While at the location, the suspect and several officers got out of the vehicle and carried out security measures. About 10 minutes later, two motorcycles sped past from Ngadi towards Tete Pancing.

The suspect is said to have swung a tactical helmet as a signal. However, the helmet hit the victim, AT (14), on the right temple, causing him to fall off the motorcycle in a prone position.

The victim was then rushed to the Karel Sadsuitubun Langgur Regional Hospital for medical treatment. However, at 13:00 WIT, the victim was pronounced dead.
