Rector candidate announced

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis has been announced as the strongest candidate to lead the North Sumatra University (USU) for the 1994-1998 term.

Dr. H.M Yusuf Hanafiah, the outgoing rector of the university, announced on Wednesday that Lubis, a professor of medicine, beat four other contenders by getting 32 votes in a closed session attended by 83 professors.

The other contenders are Dr. Aslim D. Sihotang, Dr. Bachtiar Fanani Lubis, both from the school of medicine, Dr. Amrin Fauzi and Dr. Bachtiar Hasan Miraza, both from the school of economy, respectively obtained 25, 19, four and three votes.

Yusuf, however, said that the final decision about the university's future rector is in the hands of the Minister of Education and Culture Wardiman Djojonegoro and President Soeharto, Antara reported. (par)
