Recommended Septic Tank Installation Practices for Homes

Installing septic tanks in homes must not be done haphazardly. Location, size, and drainage systems must be carefully planned to prevent environmental contamination and ensure long-term safety. Endra S. Atmawidjaja, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Sanitation and Environmental Engineering Experts (IATPI), stated that septic tank installation guidelines are covered by the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). β€˜The regulations are detailed in SNI 2398:2017, pages 6, 7, and 8,’ Endra told Kompas.com on Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Referring to SNI 2398:2017 on advanced septic tank planning, septic tanks treat domestic wastewater before it is directed to absorption media or subsequent treatment systems. Proper septic tank installation is crucial not only for maintaining household sanitation but also for preventing groundwater contamination and reducing unpleasant odours. Septic tank location must be carefully chosen. Tanks should be placed in areas accessible to vacuum trucks to facilitate regular maintenance. According to planning standards, septic tanks must be installed at a safe distance from clean water sources such as wells. A minimum distance of 10 metres is typically required to reduce the risk of bacterial contamination of groundwater. Additionally, septic tanks should not be placed too close to building foundations. They are recommended to be at least 1.5 metres away from the house structure to ensure structural safety. Waste drainage channels leading to the septic tank must have sufficient gradient to ensure smooth flow and prevent blockages. Installation should occur on ground that does not easily flood. Septic tanks must include ventilation pipes. Ventilation expels gases produced during waste breakdown, maintaining stable air pressure and preventing odours from spreading into the home. Moreover, liquid waste from septic tanks must be directed to advanced treatment systems, such as soakaways or absorption fields, which help filter waste before it seeps into the ground. Tank size must correspond to the number of household occupants. Larger households require bigger tanks to ensure optimal waste processing. Another critical aspect is ensuring the tank is watertight to prevent direct seepage into the soil. The tank lid must be sturdy and tightly sealed to prevent leaks and maintain safety. To maintain a functional sanitation system, septic tanks require regular desludging. Sludge removal is typically needed every three to five years, depending on tank capacity and household size.
