Reckless Driver Arrives in Jakarta, Intended to Go to Ancol with Girlfriend
Police have revealed new facts regarding the case of Hafiz Mahendra (25), who was driving a Toyota Calya recklessly and against traffic on Jalan Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta. At the time of the incident, Hafiz had just arrived in Jakarta and planned to go to Ancol.
“That’s the information we have, he had just arrived in Jakarta and intended to go to Ancol,” said the Head of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Komarudin, to reporters on Thursday (26/2).
Komarudin also stated that Hafiz was with a woman in the black car with license plate number D-1640-AHB.
“At the time of the incident, the driver was not alone; there was a female passenger with him,” he said.
“We are still investigating this, but he claims she is his girlfriend,” he added.
As a result of his reckless actions, Hafiz has been named a suspect. He is charged under Article 311, paragraphs 1, 2, and 3 of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation (LLAJ), which carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a fine of Rp8 million.
In addition, the police are currently investigating potential general criminal offenses committed by the driver. This is related to the discovery of a toy gun and sharp weapons, including a machete and a dagger, in the vehicle.
Previously, a video of the reckless driving incident went viral on social media, including on the Instagram account @jakarta.terkini.
The video shows the car driving against traffic in the middle of a busy road. A police officer is also seen trying to stop the vehicle.
In the video, the police officer appears to fire a gun into the air as a warning for the car to stop.
However, instead of stopping, the driver continued to accelerate and crashed into several other vehicles, including motorcycles and cars.
The driver’s actions angered residents in the area, who chased after the car and hit it with helmets.
The Head of the Central Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Reynold Hutagalung, stated that the driver was driving recklessly and against traffic because he was found to be using a fake license plate. He said that the driver immediately fled when he was about to be stopped by officers.
“He was suspected of using a fake license plate on Jalan Gunung Sahari, so he was stopped by traffic officers Aiptu Basri and Aipda Jimber,” said Reynold.
“He became scared and fled, entering Jalan Gunung Sahari and driving against traffic from south to north,” he added.
