Reasons Why KPK Has Not Yet Examined Two New Suspects in Hajj Quota Case
JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has revealed the reasons for not yet examining two new suspects related to the alleged corruption case of the 2023-2024 Hajj quota. “We will update later when the schedule is available, as investigators are currently focused on examining parties from associations or PIHK (Special Hajj Pilgrimage Organisers),” said KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo at the Red and White Building, Jakarta, on Monday (4/5/2026). The two new suspects are former General Chairman of the Kesthuri Hajj and Umrah Travel Association, Asrul Azis Taba, and the Operational Director of PT Makassar Toraja (Maktour), Ismail Adham. Asrul and Ismail have already been subjected to a travel ban abroad for the first six months, effective from early April. In the ongoing process, the KPK has examined several PIHK, including the Director/Owner of PT Zahra Oto Mandiri (Uhud Tour), Khalid Zeed Abdullah Basalamah, on Thursday (23/4/2026). In that examination, the anti-corruption agency delved into Khalid’s statements regarding the refund of funds and discussions on additional Hajj quotas for 2022-2024. “Therefore, investigators will certainly schedule examinations for other associations or PIHK that have not yet been examined or have made refunds,” Budi stated on Thursday. In this case, the KPK initially named former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and his former special staff, Ishfah Abidal Aziz alias Gus Alex, as suspects. Both are charged under Article 2 and Article 3 of the Corruption Eradication Law (UU Tipikor), which regulate state losses. Based on calculations by the KPK and the Audit Board of Indonesia (BPK), the state losses from this corruption case amount to Rp 622 billion.
