Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has expressed his desire to turn Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said in South Jakarta into a new icon for the city once the area’s revitalisation process is complete.

He made this statement while attending the launch of Jakarta’s 499th anniversary celebrations in the Rasuna Said Car Free Day (CFD) area on Sunday (10/5/2026).

According to him, the choice of location for the event was intended to showcase the ongoing improvements being carried out by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

“Why is it being held on Jalan Rasuna Said? We want to show the public that Jakarta is undergoing improvements to have a new icon on this road,” Pramono said in his speech.

However, he assured that the road and area improvements are targeted for completion next month.

He explained that the revitalisation of the area is also inspired by the figure of Hajjah Rangkayo Rasuna Said, a national heroine from West Sumatra after whom the road is named.

“At the same time, this is inspired by the figure of Hajjah Rangkayo Rasuna Said, our national heroine from Padang. I hope that this road will become Jakarta’s new icon,” he stated.

Currently, the Rasuna Said area is indeed being tidied up and repaired, including the rehabilitation of the abandoned monorail poles and road widening.

He admitted to being surprised by the large number of residents who came from early morning to exercise or enjoy the clear atmosphere of the road.

“Why is this (CFD) being held? Because of the extraordinary public demand, and earlier I was surprised and shocked; on the first day of the Car Free Day, the public was very enthusiastic from the morning,” Pramono said.

According to him, the Rasuna Said CFD will start running effectively on 1 June 2026 with the same operating hours as the Sudirman-Thamrin CFD, beginning at 05:30 WIB.

Pramono believes that adding a CFD location is necessary so that the public has an alternative place to exercise besides the always crowded Sudirman-Thamrin area during weekends.

Pramono stated that this step is being taken to change Jakarta’s waste management pattern, which has previously involved direct dumping to Bantargebang without sorting.

“Now everything is just transported and dumped in Bantargebang. Now we are starting with sorting first; organic and inorganic are separated,” he said.
