Rano Karno Warns Sinkholes Could Occur Elsewhere in Jakarta After Lenteng Agung Incident
Jakarta, Kompas.com – Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno has commented on the road sinkhole on Lenteng Agung Road towards Depok in South Jakarta. He stated that similar incidents could occur elsewhere in the city.
‘What I note is that sinkholes may not only happen in those areas. This is due to water seepage, and we don’t know where it might occur in Jakarta, wallahualam,’ Rano said when interviewed at Bundaran HI on Friday, 29 May 2026.
‘Therefore, after the sinkhole occurred last night, I immediately contacted the Water Resources Department to address it,’ he added.
Rano explained that repairing the road sinkhole cannot be done simply. Heavy machinery is required to excavate the damaged section.
‘As observed, heavy equipment is necessary because it cannot be left unexcavated,’ he said.
The Jakarta provincial government is currently implementing temporary measures by installing steel plates at the sinkhole site. Rano noted this has helped reduce traffic congestion in the Lenteng Agung area.
During the interview, Rano also highlighted the importance of public participation in reporting road damage in Jakarta. He stated that prompt reports from citizens enable the government to address issues more swiftly.
‘This is public participation, allowing us to be quickly informed,’ he said.
Previously, the road on Lenteng Agung Road towards Depok collapsed, swallowing two lanes and causing prolonged traffic jams on Friday morning. The Jakarta Water Resources Department suspects the sinkhole was linked to a crossing of the UI connecting channel (PHB) beneath the road.
