Ramadhan Ignites Love (Mahabbah)

| | Source: REPUBLIKA Translated from Indonesian | Social Policy

Ramadhan is not merely about fear of Allah, but about falling in love with Him. If fasting is undertaken solely as an obligation, it feels burdensome; but if undertaken out of love, it transforms into yearning. This is the deepest secret of worship: mahabbah (love) that motivates, not compulsion that oppresses. Ramadhan comes to elevate the quality of our relationship with Allah from mere obedience to one filled with love.

Love for Allah does not emerge from rhetoric, but from closeness that is continuously cultivated. Fasting multiplies spaces for communion with Him—through supplication, Qur’anic recitation, and silence. When a servant willingly forgoes what is permissible for the sake of obedience, it is not mere discipline; it is a sign of love. For love always stands ready to sacrifice.

Love as the Energy of Worship

Allah says: “And those who believe are stronger in their love for Allah.” (Qur’an 2:165). This verse affirms that faith is not merely rational conviction, but a profound emotional attachment. Mahabbah is the energy that animates righteous deeds. Without it, worship becomes dry routine devoid of spirit.

Fasting educates the heart to love what Allah loves. When the time to break the fast arrives, the joy is not merely from the cessation of hunger, but from the completion of a sacred trust of obedience. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The fasting person has two moments of joy: when breaking the fast and when meeting his Lord.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim). The second joy is the pinnacle of love.

In the tradition of Pesantren Gontor, struggle is built upon loyalty to higher values and ideals. Earnest study, disciplined congregation prayers, and selfless service are rooted in love for religion. Mahabbah produces a spiritual militancy that is calm yet steadfast. Love renders sacrifice noble.

Mahabbah and Closeness

Fasting multiplies moments of spiritual solitude, quiet space between the servant and his Lord. In supplications before breaking the fast, in the night vigil prayers, in whispered repentance, love is cultivated. Closeness does not always speak loudly; it grows through consistency. Ramadhan provides fertile ground for this growth.

Love for Allah also begets love for goodness. A heart filled with mahabbah will find it easier to give, quicker to forgive, and more sincere in helping. For it sees all as pathways to drawing near to Him. Fasting becomes a catalyst that refines this sensitivity.

The spirit of Pesantren Gontor instils awareness that service is a form of love. Serving without demanding much is a concrete expression of mahabbah. Character education emphasises not only firmness, but also spiritual warmth. Love makes discipline flexible and struggle fertile.

Love that Strengthens Civilisation

Civilisation is not built on regulation alone, but on love for values. When the community loves the Qur’an, justice, and honesty, then a strong system will develop. Ramadhan reinforces collective love for revelation and worship. It unites hearts in a common orientation.

Mahabbah also serves as a remedy for conflict. Love for Allah begets humility and willingness to reconcile. A heart full of love is not easily filled with hatred. From this foundation, brotherhood (ukhuwah) discovers its spiritual grounding.

In education, love produces long-term loyalty. Those who love their knowledge will be diligent, those who love their mission will be patient, and those who love Allah will persevere. Ramadhan plants this love so that struggle is not mere formality, but living devotion.
