Ramadhan Evening Markets in Yogyakarta Frequently Cause Traffic Congestion When Held on Roadside

YOGYAKARTA — The presence of evening markets during Ramadhan on several road segments in Yogyakarta is requested not to disrupt traffic flow. Harry Purwanto, Head of the Road Transport and Safety Guidance Division at Yogyakarta’s Transportation Authority (Dishub), emphasised that the primary function of roads remains as traffic space, so safety and order aspects must be prioritised.

Harry reminded that road use is regulated under Law No. 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation. The use of roads outside their traffic function must be accompanied by a permit from the police. Therefore, Ramadhan market organisers are also requested to coordinate with the Transportation Authority before activities take place.

“Roads are designated for traffic. However, we understand that during the Ramadhan moment there is a need and tradition of Ramadhan markets in certain areas,” said Harry on Wednesday (25/2/2026).

“If already permitted, we help arrange traffic,” he said.

The Transportation Authority has directed that Ramadhan markets should not be held on protocol roads or main city access routes. In addition, recommended locations should be on residential roads or segments that still have alternative routes.

“For main access roads, we direct organisations not to use the road body,” he said.
