Radar installed at troubled airport
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuter): A mobile radar has been installed at Kuala Lumpur's airport to replace one knocked out by a fire but it will be another week before flight schedules return to normal, Malaysian Airlines System said yesterday.
A mobile radar system, on loan from South Africa, was installed at Subang international airport on Sunday.
"The calibration process will take a few days and the air traffic controllers also need some training to get familiar with the new equipment," said a spokeswoman for the airline.
A fire on Aug. 13 badly damaged a US$6.7 million terminal approach radar system, bought in June 1993 from France's Thompson-CSF. Takeoffs and landings have been reduced from around 28 to 30 an hour to 18, as air traffic controllers have had to rely on radio communications and visual sightings.
