Quranic Message: Economic Inequality as the Beginning of a Nation's Destruction
In Islamic teachings, the concentration of wealth among a few individuals and the neglect of the poor is not merely viewed as a social issue but can also serve as a cause of a nation’s destruction.
The Quran warns humanity about the dire consequences of excessive economic exploitation. This warning is reflected in the words of Allah SWT in Surah Al-Isra, verse 16.
[Arabic text:
“If We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent people to obey, but they transgress therein, so the word (of punishment) is justified upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.”
This verse elucidates the factors that determine a nation’s fall. Collapse occurs when a handful of wealthy individuals and rulers acquire assets unjustly. They even oppress the weak and exploit the lower strata of society.
The verse serves as a reminder of the dangers of the extravagant lifestyle and luxury of the elite. When wealth distribution in a country is uneven, the chasm between the rich and the poor widens, eventually sparking social unrest.
“The rich grow ever richer, and the poor ever poorer. Ultimately, the consequences of these excessive economic actions and wealth inequality destroy the peace and prosperity of the nation and bring about its downfall,” writes Afzalurrahman in his book, Muhammad: The Prophet as a Merchant.
