Quake victims receive aid

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), in cooperation with the International Red Cross (ICRC), has donated medical equipment to 1,250 people affected by an earthquake on Simeulue island off Aceh.

The medical assistance package included first aid kits, toothpaste, soap and blankets, said PMI chairman Mar'ie Muhammad on Thursday.

Besides the donation, the PMI will organize medical treatment for the victims of the earthquake.

"Aside from that the Aceh government is responsible for food assistance and house repairs," said Mar'ie, a former minister of finance.

The earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale rocked Simeulue on Saturday, killing three people and injuring 44 others, 11 of them seriously. -- Antara
