MANILA (AP): A moderate earthquake shook the northern
Philippines early Wednesday but authorities reported no serious
injuries or damage.
The earthquake, with an initial magnitude of 5.5, struck at
6:59 a.m. (5:59 a.m. Jakarta time) and was centered near Laoag
City in Ilocos Norte province on the main island of Luzon, about
410 kilometers north of Manila, the Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology said.
The quake was felt at various intensities in other areas of
Ilocos Norte and nearby provinces.
It came three days after a strong earthquake damaged homes,
toppled power lines and injured six people on Batanes, one of the
Philippines' northernmost islands.
