Beijing (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia conducted the soft launch of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) cross-border service between Indonesia and China on Thursday.

Through this collaboration, Indonesians in China can make payment transactions using QRIS, and vice versa.

“This important achievement reflects the strong and growing collaboration between Bank Indonesia and the People’s Bank of China, as well as close partnerships with industry stakeholders from both countries; and more importantly, it represents a concrete step forward in strengthening financial connectivity between Indonesia and China,” said BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta in a video address at the launch event in Beijing on Thursday.

According to Filianingsih, during the sandboxing trial since 17 August 2025 with the People’s Bank of China (PBoC), QRIS service users recorded 1.64 million inbound transactions with a value of Rp556 billion.

“These inbound transactions indicate strong demand, although participation is still limited to a select group of initial users. On the outbound transaction side, the number of transactions has reached around 8,000, with a value of approximately Rp6.4 billion. We are confident that these figures will continue to grow following today’s soft launch,” Filianingsih explained.

The cross-border QRIS payment connection, she continued, enables fast, smooth, affordable, secure, and reliable transactions.

“By allowing users to transact using their domestic mobile applications, we enhance convenience while maintaining strong user protections. Beyond the technical dimension, this initiative is also expected to support tourism flows, facilitate SME participation in cross-border trade, and further strengthen people-to-people connectivity between Indonesia and China,” said Filianingsih.

“Through the Local Currency Transaction Framework, we also aim to increase efficiency, reduce dependence on third-party currencies, and strengthen the resilience of our financial systems,” she added.

Present at the soft launch event in person were Director of the Payment System Policy Department (DKSP) of Bank Indonesia Dudi Dermawan, Indonesian Ambassador to China and Mongolia Djauhari Oratmangun, BI Representative Head in Beijing Yulian Wihantoro, and Deputy Director of UnionPay International Xie Qunsong.

Following the official launch, on the Indonesian side, there are 24 providers involved, consisting of 16 banks and eight non-bank institutions. On the Chinese side, 19 providers are recorded as ready to support this payment connectivity.

Before China, BI had also officially launched QRIS services in South Korea on 1 April. Previously, QRIS services could also be used in Thailand since August 2022, Malaysia since May 2023, Singapore since November 2023, and Japan since August 2025.
