Jakarta, VIVA — Indonesia’s digital payment system has gained international recognition and attention. The transformation undertaken has not relied solely on technology adoption, but rather on a combination of various factors and cross-institutional collaboration, making transactions faster, more efficient, and more reliable whilst strengthening the foundations of the national digital financial ecosystem.

Attention to Indonesia’s fast, efficient, and inclusive digital payment ecosystem has come from global financial institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). The spotlight emerged during the IsDB Townhall Strategic Lecture on Digital Transformation in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on 12 February 2026.

IsDB President H.E. Dr Muhammad Sulaiman Al Jasser openly praised Indonesia’s efforts in strengthening the global Islamic economy and finance. He assessed that Indonesia, particularly Bank Indonesia (BI), had successfully built a digital foundation that promotes both efficiency and financial inclusion.

This appreciation was reflected in the development of several priority IsDB projects in Indonesia, particularly in the health sector. During the meeting, IsDB also expressed its commitment to expanding cooperation across various fields and supporting the development of payment system connectivity.

Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo outlined the keys to the success of digital payment transformation before representatives of 56 IsDB member countries. Perry highlighted governance and leadership as the secrets behind inclusive digital payments.

“The success of digital transformation is determined not only by technology, but also by strong governance, cross-sector synergy, continuous innovation, and leadership at all levels of the organisation,” Perry said, as quoted from Bank Indonesia’s official website on Friday, 20 February 2026.

Perry added that the implementation of Indonesia’s Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) had brought about concrete changes. The strengthening of QRIS and BI-FAST, along with cross-border payment connectivity, has been able to drive faster and more efficient transactions whilst expanding access to financial services for the public. This transformation also forms part of the move towards an Integrated Digital Central Bank.

Going forward, Perry said, BI will maximise the utilisation of data and artificial intelligence, digitise decision-making processes, and strengthen digital governance and work culture. These measures are expected to produce more responsive policies and increasingly efficient operations.
