The Government of Qatar formally denied reports claiming that it had severed diplomatic communication channels with Iran. Amid massive escalation shaking the Middle East in March 2026, Doha asserted that dialogue remains open despite dramatically reduced intensity.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Majed Al-Ansari, stated that Qatar’s primary focus at present is on de-escalation efforts to prevent a broader regional war. However, he acknowledged that high-level interaction between the two countries has been severely limited since the crisis erupted in late February.

Al-Ansari revealed that since escalation began on 28 February 2026, only one telephone call has occurred between the highest-level diplomats (Foreign Ministers) of Qatar and Iran. This demonstrates an unprecedented strain in relations between the two countries, which were previously known to maintain relatively intense engagement.

“Our communication channels with Iran are not severed, but we are currently directing all our energy towards de-escalation efforts,” Al-Ansari said at a press conference in Doha on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.

Qatar, which typically serves as a mediator between Iran and the United States, stated it is no longer performing its intermediary role. This is because Qatar must focus on countering the emerging threat of Iranian attacks targeting its own sovereign territory.

The tensions originated from a joint U.S.-Israeli military operation on 28 February 2026 that targeted strategic facilities in Iran. The operation resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei—an event that fundamentally altered the geopolitical landscape.

Tehran reported that the death toll from the U.S.-Israeli air strikes exceeded 1,200 people, including a bombing of a girls’ school in southern Iran. In response, Iran launched a massive counter-attack targeting Israeli territory and U.S. military bases throughout the Middle East, which now also threatens the security of neighbouring states including Qatar.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry continues to urge the international community to intervene diplomatically immediately to halt the escalating bloodshed of the past ten days.
