The Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) has condemned Israel’s interception and detention of the humanitarian mission heading to Gaza, including Indonesian journalists carrying out their duties, and called for strengthening safeguards for press freedom in conflict zones.

Chairman Akhmad Munir stated that blocking civilian and humanitarian missions in international waters is unacceptable as it endangers journalists while they perform their professional duties. ‘We strongly condemn Israel’s actions in intercepting and detaining the humanitarian mission to Gaza, including Indonesian journalists on assignment. The safety of media personnel must be respected and protected in any situation,’ Munir said in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at least ten ships from the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 mission were detained by Israeli authorities, including the Amanda, Barbaros, Josef, and Blue Toys.

PWI noted that vessels carrying Indonesian journalists have yet to be contacted and the status of crew remains uncertain. The journalists’ organization also supported the Indonesian government’s diplomatic steps to ensure the safety and protection of all Indonesian citizens participating in the humanitarian mission.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry is reported to have coordinated with the Indonesian embassies in Ankara, Cairo, and Amman to prepare protective measures or repatriation of Indonesian citizens if necessary.

‘Our prayers and hopes accompany all journalists and humanitarian volunteers, and we wish them safe return as soon as possible,’ Munir added.
