Putin Escalates Tensions: Massive Missile Strikes Prepared Against Ukraine
The Russian Ministry of Defence has stated that it is planning massive attacks against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This threat emerges several days after a lethal Russian bombardment hit a warehouse near Kyiv, further intensifying fears of a crisis breaking out during the winter season.
According to reports, the Russian Ministry of Defence, via a Telegram post on Sunday, framed the planned attacks as a response to ongoing Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy sites. “In accordance with received instructions, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are beginning preparations to launch large-scale attacks against Ukrainian energy facilities in response to the continuous attacks by the Kyiv regime against Russian civilian infrastructure as well as fuel and energy facilities,” the statement explained.
This warning comes as the death toll from the Russian attack on a warehouse west of Kyiv on Friday night has risen to 38, with four people still missing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that emergency workers had extinguished most of the fire at the ammunition storage facility in the village of Myla, making it Russia’s deadliest attack in Ukraine this year.
“The situation is horrific, and the consequences of the terrible negligence of those storing explosives right next to people,” Zelensky stated. He added on Saturday that an official investigation has been launched to understand how and why the ammunition was stored at that location.
Russian forces continue to increase the frequency of missile strikes on Ukrainian cities as Kyiv struggles with a shortage of air defence equipment. Conversely, Ukraine continues to launch long-range drone attacks on Russian oil refineries and logistics hubs. This strategic move aims to increase the cost of war for Moscow and test the resolve of Russian President Vladimir Putin, after this deadly conflict has lasted for more than four and a half years.
The escalating situation has prompted warnings from national security experts and local officials that Ukraine could face an extremely difficult winter due to systematic attacks on the power grid during freezing temperatures. Since April, Zelensky has emphasised the importance of ensuring that the country’s energy facilities and critical infrastructure remain fully operational and reliably protected.
Iryna Terekh, CEO of the Ukrainian drone manufacturer Fire Point, asserted that Kyiv must remain realistic about the threats currently faced. “Winter is coming, clearly, and last winter was very harsh for Ukraine and major cities in general. This winter will not be any easier, and may even be more difficult,” she stated.
