The Russian Ministry of Defence has stated that it is planning\nmassive attacks against Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure. This threat\nemerges several days after a lethal Russian bombardment hit a warehouse\nnear Kyiv, further intensifying fears of a crisis breaking out during\nthe winter season.<\/p>\n
According to reports, the Russian Ministry of Defence, via a Telegram\npost on Sunday, framed the planned attacks as a response to ongoing\nUkrainian strikes on Russian energy sites. \u201cIn accordance with received\ninstructions, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are beginning\npreparations to launch large-scale attacks against Ukrainian energy\nfacilities in response to the continuous attacks by the Kyiv regime\nagainst Russian civilian infrastructure as well as fuel and energy\nfacilities,\u201d the statement explained.<\/p>\n
This warning comes as the death toll from the Russian attack on a\nwarehouse west of Kyiv on Friday night has risen to 38, with four people\nstill missing. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that\nemergency workers had extinguished most of the fire at the ammunition\nstorage facility in the village of Myla, making it Russia\u2019s deadliest\nattack in Ukraine this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe situation is horrific, and the consequences of the terrible\nnegligence of those storing explosives right next to people,\u201d Zelensky\nstated. He added on Saturday that an official investigation has been\nlaunched to understand how and why the ammunition was stored at that\nlocation.<\/p>\n
Russian forces continue to increase the frequency of missile strikes\non Ukrainian cities as Kyiv struggles with a shortage of air defence\nequipment. Conversely, Ukraine continues to launch long-range drone\nattacks on Russian oil refineries and logistics hubs. This strategic\nmove aims to increase the cost of war for Moscow and test the resolve of\nRussian President Vladimir Putin, after this deadly conflict has lasted\nfor more than four and a half years.<\/p>\n
The escalating situation has prompted warnings from national security\nexperts and local officials that Ukraine could face an extremely\ndifficult winter due to systematic attacks on the power grid during\nfreezing temperatures. Since April, Zelensky has emphasised the\nimportance of ensuring that the country\u2019s energy facilities and critical\ninfrastructure remain fully operational and reliably protected.<\/p>\n
Iryna Terekh, CEO of the Ukrainian drone manufacturer Fire Point,\nasserted that Kyiv must remain realistic about the threats currently\nfaced. \u201cWinter is coming, clearly, and last winter was very harsh for\nUkraine and major cities in general.
