Iran-US Negotiations in Pakistan End in Failure

Negotiations between Iran and the US, initiated by Pakistan, have failed. The continuation of the ceasefire in Iran is now in question.

According to Al-Jazeera and CNN on Sunday (12/4), the negotiations were held by the two warring countries during a two-week ceasefire period. The US delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance.

Meanwhile, the Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The negotiations began on Saturday (11/4).

After 21 hours, the marathon negotiations officially ended without any agreement. Vance said the marathon talks addressed various issues.

“We’ve done it for 21 hours, and we’ve had a number of substantive discussions with the Iranian side. That’s the good news,” Vance said at a press conference in Islamabad.

Even after discussing for 21 hours, Vance said, the two countries did not reach an agreement. He described it as bad news for Iran.

“The bad news is we haven’t reached an agreement. And I think that’s much worse news for Iran than it is for the United States. So we’re heading back to the United States without an agreement,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said no one expected talks with the US to reach an agreement in one session. It described it as indeed difficult to happen.

“Of course, from the beginning, we shouldn’t have expected to reach an agreement in one session. No one expected that,” said ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, according to the state television station IRIB.
