Purbaya: Rupiah Nearing Rp 17,500 Does Not Disrupt Energy Subsidy Calculations
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has confirmed that the weakening rupiah exchange rate approaching Rp 17,500 per US dollar does not impact the government’s energy subsidy calculations. According to Purbaya, the government has used sufficiently high crude oil price assumptions in national fiscal planning from the outset. The current rupiah condition still falls within the accounted scenarios. “When we calculated last time, it was USD 120 per barrel, and the rupiah is close to that, so there’s no problem. I don’t need to recalculate,” Purbaya told reporters at the Attorney General’s Office in Jakarta on Wednesday (13/5/2026). The meeting was more directed towards discussing strategies to strengthen non-tax state revenues (PNBP) from the oil and gas as well as mining sectors. “We didn’t discuss subsidies, but we talked about plans to strengthen PNBP from the oil and gas sector. The plan is quite good, I think,” said Purbaya. One of the projects discussed was the development of a gas pipeline network from Sumatra to Java. According to Purbaya, this project is important if the development of the Andaman gas field in Aceh is completed. The gas supply can then be directly channelled to the Sumatra and Java regions. “There’s one gas pipeline project from Sumatra that might connect to Java. If the Andaman field is completed, it can be transferred directly to Sumatra-Java. That’s a good project,” he stated. 2026 State Budget data shows that the average Indonesian Crude Price (ICP) up to March 2026 remains at USD 68 per barrel.
