Purbaya Admits Not Yet Receiving BPKP Tax Refund Audit Results
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has stated that he has not yet received the audit results on tax refunds from the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP). Previously, Purbaya requested that BPKP conduct an audit of tax refunds starting from 2016 to 2025.
Purbaya believes that the audit results for tax refunds from 2016 to 2025 have not yet been completed by BPKP.
“It hasn’t been submitted to me. I requested it several months ago, perhaps it’s not finished yet. So I requested it from 2016 to 2025,” said Purbaya, when met after the inauguration of Ministry of Finance officials on Tuesday (12/5/2026).
Purbaya’s decision was based on an internal investigation that had been conducted to trace the amount of tax refunds from the previous year. The value of tax refunds in 2025 amounted to Rp 361.15 trillion, an increase of 35.9% from the previous year.
According to him, this internal investigation was separate from the total refund audit that he had submitted to BPKP.
“I requested it to be audited properly so that we don’t get caught off guard. Especially in the coal industry. The VAT refunds, I covered Rp 25 trillion net, so I paid. There are some incorrect calculations,” said Purbaya.
He assured that in the future, the implementation of refunds would be more measured and minimising data errors. Because if there are still those who play around with refund data, Purbaya emphasised that he would take action against the related parties.
Purbaya admitted that last year he had questioned his subordinates regarding the amount of refund values. The report he received showed a small amount, but the realisation actually swelled.
“So, last year I misjudged the total refunds that came out. Even though in the meeting I had asked how much the potential was. My staff said it was small. At the end of the year, I only found out that what came out was many times more than what they mentioned. So that’s what we will fix, don’t let there be misinformation again,” he explained.
