JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo has acknowledged that several People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat) construction projects in various regions are still behind schedule. Nevertheless, overall construction progress remains under control and is being actively pursued. Dody made this statement during his inspection of the Phase II People’s School construction in Surabaya, East Java, on Sunday (12/04/2026). He assured that the project is proceeding according to the completion target of 20 June 2026. Dody explained that the physical progress of the Phase II People’s School construction in Surabaya has now reached approximately 45 percent, with the quality of work assessed as good. The project is supported by 571 workers who are being optimised to accelerate completion. The People’s School is located in Kedung Cowek Ward, Bulak Subdistrict, and is being built on a plot of land approximately 6.6 hectares in size. The facilities being constructed include classrooms for primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels with a capacity for up to 1,000 students. In addition, there are student dormitories, teachers’ apartments, a mosque, a multipurpose building, a canteen, clean water installations, and sports facilities such as a basketball court and mini soccer field. Dody emphasised the importance of maintaining the commitment to complete the project so that the facilities can be utilised at the start of the new academic year. “I ask all parties to maintain their commitment so that construction can be finished on time. Insyaallah, if the progress is as good as this, it will be completed before 20 June. Thus, by 1 July, these facilities can already be used for teaching and learning activities,” he said. “For those that are still behind, they must be caught up immediately with concrete steps on the ground, including adding workers and strengthening supervision,” he added. Dody further noted that the construction of People’s Schools is part of the government’s priority programme to improve the quality of human resources (SDM) through the provision of decent and integrated education, particularly for children from underprivileged families.
