Public Outcry Over Sudden Increase in Non-Subsidised Fuel Prices
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Non-subsidised fuel prices suddenly increased on 18 April 2026 without any public notification. Residents were shocked upon seeing this sharp price hike. For information, Pertamax Turbo is now priced at Rp 19,400 per litre, up Rp 6,300 from the previous Rp 13,100 per litre. Meanwhile, Pertamina Dex also experienced an increase of Rp 9,400, from Rp 14,500 to Rp 23,900 per litre. On the other hand, Pertamax remains at Rp 12,300 per litre, and Pertamax Green 95 is still sold for Rp 12,900 per litre. The government’s minimal socialisation regarding the non-subsidised fuel price increase is now under scrutiny. Member of Commission VI of the DPR from the PDIP faction, Mufti Anam, assessed that the policy burdens the public. Because, he said, it was carried out without socialisation and prior to the government’s narrative that reassured the public about fuel prices. “The fuel price increase was done without preparation and the amount is quite significant. This policy is very burdensome to the public,” said Mufti in his statement, quoted on Sunday (19/4/2026). Mufti assessed that this policy is a step backwards, considering that previously the government was able to hold back increases in subsidised fuel prices amid global geopolitical pressures on world oil prices. “The public was previously reassured with a narrative that fuel prices would not rise. However, suddenly there was a price surge without readiness and communication,” he said. According to Mufti, this non-subsidised fuel increase aligns with long-standing concerns about potential price adjustments through other schemes even if subsidised fuel prices remain. He assessed that the government has given hopes to the public that do not match reality.
