Puan warns that US-Iran conflict could threaten Indonesia's economic stability
Jakarta – The Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has warned that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between the United States, Israel and Iran could threaten global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy.
She made these remarks during the Opening Plenary Session of the Fourth Parliamentary Term 2025/2026 at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 10 March 2026.
“The impact of the geopolitical conflict occurring in the Middle East will affect global economic stability, including Indonesia’s economy,” Puan said in her address.
Puan stated that the conflict would influence global oil prices, transportation costs and the rupiah’s exchange rate against the US dollar.
“This will impact oil prices, transportation costs, commodity prices, the rupiah-dollar exchange rate, trade chains, economic growth and fiscal sustainability in carrying out development,” she explained.
In these circumstances, Puan noted that the Indonesian people still hold great hope that the government will be present to provide a dignified life for society.
“In such an economic situation, and at the same time, the people continue to place great hope that the state will be present in creating employment opportunities, increasing people’s incomes, improving access to education and health services, and strengthening grassroots economics,” she concluded.
