Jakarta — The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has formally opened the fourth session of the House of Representatives for the 2025-2026 parliamentary year during a plenary meeting held at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday.

“I hereby announce to all the people of Indonesia that the Fourth Session of the Parliamentary Year 2025-2026 commences on Tuesday, 10 March 2026 through 21 April 2026,” she stated.

She urged all parliamentary members to perform their constitutional functions to realise the welfare of the people with full responsibility and to the best of their ability. “Best wishes in working to advance the welfare of the people,” she added.

Puan noted that during this session, the House of Representatives together with the government will continue to complete the national legislative agenda programme and finalise discussions on a number of draft laws.

She emphasised that laws are formed as an instrument of the state to ensure the achievement of public order, the welfare of the people, the protection of public interests, and the development of accountability in the exercise of state power.

“The House of Representatives and government, in formulating a law, require the same commitment, namely to prioritise national interests above group interests, sectoral interests, and short-term considerations,” she said.

She underscored that law-making cannot be based solely on considerations of policy popularity or pressure from momentary public opinion.

“Legislation must be grounded in the principle of caution, policy rationality, and long-term considerations that take into account state stability, legal certainty, and sustainability,” she added.

In her address, Puan also explained that the House’s supervisory function will be directed towards improving government performance in implementing laws and national development.

She identified at least ten strategic issues of public concern that warrant government attention for resolution. These include the protection of public data in data transfer agreements between Indonesia and the United States, evaluation of law enforcement performance, and the supply, distribution, and stability of food prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijri.

Additionally, she mentioned Ramadan transport readiness regarding fuel availability, affordable transport fares, and infrastructure; and mitigation of Umrah pilgrimages due to geopolitical situations in the Middle East.

Further issues include the establishment of Village and Sub-District Red-and-White Cooperatives, evaluation of the Education Fund Management Institute (LPDP) scholarship programme, and rehabilitation and reconstruction of disaster-affected areas.

She also highlighted legal aid access for the poor and strengthening border security to prevent transnational crime and human trafficking.

“The government’s seriousness in following up on House of Representatives recommendations regarding these various matters represents a form of constitutional accountability in the institutional relationship between the legislative and executive branches,” Puan said.
