Puan Ensures Copyright Bill Will Protect Creators and Creative Professionals in Digital Era
JAKARTA – The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, has confirmed that a Bill to Amend Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright will be drafted to protect creators and creative professionals, particularly in the digital era.
The Copyright Bill has been established for discussion as a House of Representatives initiative.
“This Copyright Bill is being drafted to address the challenges of the continually evolving digital era, so that protection for creators and creative professionals becomes increasingly robust and relevant,” Puan told reporters on Thursday, 12 March 2026.
Puan wishes to ensure that every creator – musicians, writers, artists, journalists, and other creative professionals – receives fair compensation and economic benefits for their work.
The Copyright Bill regulates more transparent and accountable royalty management. In this way, the economic rights of creators are truly realised by those entitled to them.
Furthermore, the Copyright Bill emphasises the responsibility of digital platforms in order for them to become fair partners to creators, rather than merely exploiting their work without adequate compensation.
According to Puan, the Copyright Bill also strengthens protections for journalistic works and press companies. She stated that the bill also introduces regulations concerning artificial intelligence and copyright, representing an adaptive step to ensure technology does not compromise creators’ rights.
“The nation’s cultural wealth in the form of traditional cultural expressions is safeguarded and inventoried by the state, so that it remains preserved and its value is protected,” said Puan.
On this occasion, Puan stated that the House of Representatives is opening its doors widely to receive input from the public.
According to Puan, the ultimate goal of the Copyright Bill is to create a healthy, fair creative ecosystem that provides tangible benefits to as many Indonesian citizens as possible.
“This Copyright Bill is being drafted to address the challenges of the continually evolving digital era, so that protection for creators and creative professionals becomes increasingly robust and relevant,” Puan emphasised.
