PTBA examines safe distance between coal mine and residential areas in Sawahlunto
Sawahlunto — PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) is conducting a comprehensive assessment of safe distance zones between coal mining operational sites and residential areas as part of preparations to reopen coal mining operations in the Langkok area, Sawahlunto, West Sumatra.
Yulfaizon, General Manager of PTBA’s Ombilin Mining Unit, stated in Sawahlunto on Tuesday that the safe distance is being calculated comprehensively by experts working on the Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) document.
“In planning the mine reopening, we have already considered safety aspects and environmental protection as well as the welfare of residents near the operational location,” he said.
He emphasised that mine production and operations would be managed to avoid disrupting the quality of life of the surrounding community or environment.
After the AMDAL document is completed, the mine’s operational plan will be socialised with Sawahlunto City Government and the public.
Previously, Sawahlunto Mayor Riyanda Putra stated that the municipal government is prepared to support the mine reopening provided the company prioritises community safety and the needs of surrounding residents.
“The municipal government supports mine reopening as long as community safety and environmental protection remain the company’s primary focus,” he emphasised.
With thorough technical studies and coordination with the regional government, PTBA hopes the mine reopening can proceed based on principles of safety, sustainability, and social responsibility towards the surrounding community.
