PT PAL to Build Over 20 Ships This Year for State-Owned Enterprises
PT PAL Indonesia will build more than 20 ships this year, all of which are orders from state-owned enterprises (SOEs). This was announced by PAL Indonesia Chief Executive Kaharuddin Djenod following a Strategic Discussion on Maritime Industry at the Movenpick Hotel in Jakarta on Friday (27 February 2026).
Djenod stated that the project represents follow-up on a directive from Danantara Indonesia requiring all BUMN shipping sector enterprises to order ships from PT PAL. “Beyond the projects that PT PAL Indonesia already possesses, we will work on more than 20 ships this year,” he said. “We will distribute these 20 ships to shipyards that already have commitments and meet the requirements to build ships of various sizes.”
Beyond shipyards, 100 domestic maritime support industry companies will be directly involved in the project execution. Djenod expressed hope that this scheme would achieve sufficient economies of scale to foster development of the maritime support industry, which has previously remained suboptimal.
“The assignment to PT PAL is not intended for monopoly purposes, but rather to raise the quality of Indonesia’s shipyard and component industries together,” he explained. According to Djenod, without protective policies, the domestic shipping industry would struggle to grow.
Consequently, SOEs such as PT Pelni, PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero), and PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) are obligated to order ships from PT PAL. “All our companies operating in shipping must produce at PT PAL. Without support and protection, it is impossible for us to grow, which is why I require Pelni, ASDP, and PIS to have all their ships built there,” Djenod stated at the maritime industry discussion held in the Gelora Bung Karno area in Jakarta on Wednesday (28 January 2026).
