PT Garam Increases Production Through Extensification

The President Director of PT Garam (Persero), Abraham Mose, stated that efforts to increase national salt production are ongoing to achieve the salt self-sufficiency targets set by the government through extensification programmes.

“Since last year, we have begun utilising ineffective land to be converted into salt fields. This effort is being undertaken to support the central government’s policy of ensuring Indonesia no longer relies on salt imports,” said Abraham during a beach clean-up event in Sampang, East Java, on Friday.

He explained that President Prabowo Subianto has issued Presidential Regulation Number 17 of 2025 regarding the Acceleration of National Salt Development to achieve independence and self-sufficiency in salt production.

This regulation, he noted, contains four key points: the target for salt self-sufficiency, the cessation of imports, the empowerment of salt farmers, and the utilisation of salt production technology.

“The extensification we are currently undertaking is an effort to achieve the first target and to stop imports as the second point,” he said.

In addition to extensification, Abraham added that PT Garam is also increasing the number of brine ponds and improving saltwater flow into reservoirs to boost production.

“Through this extensification, we are beginning to build salt industrialisation in several provinces to identify salt sources, thereby revitalising salt-producing communities,” said Abraham.

Regarding the production target for the 2026 salt season on Madura Island, PT Garam President Director Abraham Mose stated that production is expected to rise by approximately 500 tonnes, from the previous 350,000 tonnes to 400,000 tonnes.

“We are optimistic that this target can be achieved, as the weather is very favourable and we have implemented systemic efforts to increase salt production,” he explained.
