REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – The practice of fasting during the month of Ramadan is believed to be beneficial for mental health and emotional stability. Amidst busy schedules and the pressures of social media, Ramadan provides an opportune time for self-regulation through the practice of fasting.

Clinical psychologist Dian Kartika Amelia Arbil stated that fasting and mental health are interconnected. Scientifically, fasting is related to hormonal changes in the body, which directly impact a person’s psychological state.

Dian explained that several studies have shown that fasting has a positive effect on increasing endorphin levels. This hormone plays a crucial role in providing a sense of calm and helping to reduce stress levels naturally.

“Although some studies show varying results, in general, the process of self-restraint during fasting triggers the body to produce positive hormones that support a good mood,” she said in a written statement quoted on Tuesday (24/2/2026).

She emphasised that the core of the practice of fasting lies in the exercise of self-control. This ability forms the basis of mental health, as individuals are encouraged to recognise and manage their emotional impulses.

According to Dian, the practice of self-control is also a key asset in maintaining emotional stability amidst the pressures of work or academic tasks, which often trigger anxiety. “Essentially, fasting is an exercise to improve self-control. Fasting trains individuals to restrain themselves from overdoing things. If done regularly, this will have a significant impact on strengthening a person’s self-control,” said Dian.
