Psychologist: An enjoyable learning atmosphere helps children develop their potential
Jakarta (ANTARA) — An enjoyable learning atmosphere can help children develop curiosity, creativity, and the courage to try new things, according to child and family psychologist Irma Gustiana A., S.Psi., M.Psi.
“Children learn more easily when they feel emotionally safe, valued, and have the opportunity to explore without fear of making mistakes,” said Irma at the Oreo Berbagi Inspirasi event with Fatayat NU in Jakarta on Sunday (6/9).
In a statement issued by Oreo on Monday, Irma said a positive learning environment not only helps children understand learning material, but can also support the development of a number of abilities needed in their growth process.
She said an enjoyable learning atmosphere can encourage curiosity, creativity, problem-solving skills, and children’s courage to try new things.
This approach, she said, can be applied through simple activities that allow children to learn whilst playing and interacting with the people around them.
Deputy Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Veronica Tan said parents need to set aside time to accompany their children during their developmental years.
“What children see, the words that are spoken, and the love and affection given by parents will be noticed by children. Therefore, let us commit to setting aside time with our children, to educate and accompany them,” said Veronica.
She believes strengthening the role of women and families must be done collectively through collaboration between various parties in order to provide better support for children’s growth and development.
Meanwhile, Deputy Secretary-General of PP Fatayat NU, Hj. Kusnainik, said mothers have a strategic role in creating an environment that supports children’s learning process starting from home.
“We believe that mothers have a strategic role in providing an environment that supports children’s learning process from home,” she said.
She said mothers also need spaces to learn from one another and share experiences about parenting and supporting children.
Participants were also introduced to the playful learning approach — learning through play — via literacy, numeracy, science, and English activities. Following the briefing, participants took part in simulations and practical exercises using the method so it could be applied in activities with children at home.
The event was a collaboration between Oreo and Fatayat NU through the Oreo Berbagi Inspirasi programme, themed “Encouraging the SERU Generation to Grow More Meaningfully Through Enjoyable Learning”.
Country Head of Corporate and Government Affairs at Mondelēz Indonesia, Marfusita Hamburgiwati, said positive learning experiences can be built through various simple activities together with family.
“Through togetherness in activities such as learning and playing together, children can feel more comfortable exploring, trying new things, and developing their potential,” she said.
According to her, family support is one of the important elements in creating an environment that helps children grow and develop.
