Jakarta, VIVA – Head of the Task Force for the Acceleration of Rehabilitation and Reconstruction (PRR) Post-Disaster Sumatra, Tito Karnavian, said thousands of educational facilities affected by hydrometeorological disasters in Aceh, North Sumatra (Sumut), and West Sumatra (Sumbar) will be repaired soon. ‘There are quite a lot affected, including PAUD, TK, SD, SMP, SMA. This is being coordinated and we are collecting data from local governments,’ Tito said. The remarks were made at the sidelines of the handover of socio-economic assistance to disaster victims in Kabupaten Pidie Jaya, Aceh, on Friday, 6 March 2026. He explained that the government has classified the level of damage to schools from slight, moderate, and heavy to completely destroyed. Repairs will be carried out in stages with a priority scale. ‘The categories are slight, moderate and heavy damage; they will be repaired gradually according to priority,’ he said. Nevertheless, the government ensures teaching and learning continues. Schools damaged slightly and moderately will remain in use while repairs are carried out. ‘But the primary aim is that education must go on. Therefore those damaged slightly and moderately will be repaired while school activities continue,’ Tito said. Meanwhile, heavily damaged schools are temporarily using emergency facilities, such as tents for learning provided by the government in conjunction with various ministries. ‘Some heavily damaged are still learning in tents. BNPB and Kemendikdasmen have tents equipped with other equipment as well,’ he added. According to Tito, overall teaching and learning in the disaster-affected areas has almost fully resumed, though not entirely ideal. ‘The learning process is almost 100 percent underway, but there are still some aspects that are not optimal and not ideal,’ he said. Based on provisional data, around 3,700 educational units are affected and require further handling. ‘There are around 3,700 in these three provinces that must be addressed, and that will take time,’ Tito said. He explained that public schools such as PAUD, TK, SD, SMP, and SMA are coordinated by the Ministry of Basic Education and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen), while data collection for madrasah and pesantren is conducted by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag).
