Protest for better pay

JAMBI, Jambi: More than 300 employees of the Loka Rahayu
Plywood Industries company demanded higher wages in a
demonstration yesterday.

They also demanded that the company pay their wages it has
withheld over the past seven months.

Mariana, one of the protesters, was quoted by Antara as saying
that some of the company's assets have been sold.

Muhaimin, an official from the local office of the Ministry of
Manpower, said he had tried to contact the company's headquarters
in Jakarta but failed, adding that he would continue efforts to
solve the problem.

Chairman of the Jambi chapter of the All Indonesia Workers
Union Saman said he would fight to defend the rights of the
workers. He threatened to sue the company if necessary.

The head of the company's union, Ismail, said he has sent a
letter to the company's management about the protests, which they
also plan to stage at the governor's office and at the city
council but the company has given no response.(pwn)
