Prostitution and SPSI
Prostitution and SPSI
Commenting on Saraswati Karno Barkah's letter (The Jakarta Post, Dec. 14, 1955) about prostitution business, I oppose the idea to allow prostitutes into SPSI (All-Indonesian Workers Union).
It is a weird idea to encourage prostitution and give it the same treatment as any other legal business. We should not consider sacrificing our civilized life on the altar of economical interests.
Indonesia is not a liberal country. We have to stick firmly to our own way of life guided by Pancasila, our state philosophy. To include prostitution in the union will be taken to mean that we condone this dirty business. To give a respectful privilege to prostitution would only pollute the whole community.
To my mind, the government should instead provide the prostitutes with education and training to enable them to find a 'proper' occupation. You may consider me a dreamer, but at least an effort should be made towards that direction.
