Prostitution and SPSI<\/p>\n
Commenting on Saraswati Karno Barkah's letter (The Jakarta
\nPost, Dec. 14, 1955) about prostitution business, I oppose the
\nidea to allow prostitutes into SPSI (All-Indonesian Workers
\nUnion).<\/p>\n
It is a weird idea to encourage prostitution and give it the
\nsame treatment as any other legal business. We should not
\nconsider sacrificing our civilized life on the altar of
\neconomical interests.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is not a liberal country. We have to stick firmly to
\nour own way of life guided by Pancasila, our state philosophy. To
\ninclude prostitution in the union will be taken to mean that we
\ncondone this dirty business. To give a respectful privilege to
\nprostitution would only pollute the whole community.<\/p>\n
To my mind, the government should instead provide the
\nprostitutes with education and training to enable them to find a
\n'proper' occupation. You may consider me a dreamer, but at least
\nan effort should be made towards that direction.<\/p>\n
