Jakarta (ANTARA) - Clinical nutrition specialist Dr Pande Putu Agus Mahendra, M.Gizi, Sp.GK, has reminded prospective Hajj pilgrims to consume 150 millilitres of drinking water per hour amid the extreme hot weather in the Holy Land to prevent dehydration up to heatstroke. “Aim to consume 150 millilitres of mineral water per hour to maintain hydration during worship activities,” said Pande Putu when contacted by ANTARA on Monday. The doctor, a graduate of the University of Indonesia, explained that the normal fluid requirement for adults ranges from eight to ten glasses per day, with each glass measuring 250 ml. However, fluid needs can increase during hot weather and high physical activity during the Hajj pilgrimage. According to him, dehydration can trigger disruptions in the body’s systems, including increasing the heart’s workload and burdening kidney function. Effects arising from dehydration include feeling lethargic, dizzy, headaches, and nausea. He suggested consuming fluids little by little but gradually throughout the day, especially when engaging in a lot of outdoor activities. In addition to plain water, pilgrims are also encouraged to consume fruits with high water content and soupy foods to help maintain body fluids. “Electrolyte water may be needed, but it should not be the main drink and must still be combined with mineral water,” he said. He also reminded pilgrims to regularly monitor urine colour as an indicator of the body’s hydration status. Previously, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah of Indonesia, through a social media post, reminded Hajj pilgrims to be wary of extreme hot weather in the Holy Land during the series of Hajj worship activities. In the post, the Ministry advised pilgrims to regularly drink water and not wait until thirsty, use umbrellas or light-coloured protective gear, and rest periodically in shaded areas to prevent fatigue due to high temperatures.
