Prosecutors rejected the defence plea submitted by Fandi Ramadhan, a crew member from Medan, in the case of smuggling 2 tons of methamphetamine to Batam, Riau Islands. The prosecution stated that it would still seek the death penalty for Fandi.

As reported by detikSumut on Thursday (26/2/2026), the prosecutors refuted each point of Fandi’s and his lawyer’s defence. The prosecutors stated that although the tanker ship Sea Dragon was initially intercepted in the waters of Karimun Anak, the evidence of methamphetamine was only found when the ship docked at the Tanjunguncang Customs dock in Batam.

“The argument by the legal counsel that the indictment is invalid is unfounded and must be dismissed,” said prosecutor Muhammad Arfian at the Batam District Court.

The prosecutors also refuted Fandi’s claim that he was unaware of the narcotics cargo on board. According to the prosecution, Fandi is a graduate of the Malahayati Maritime Polytechnic and holds a seafarer’s certificate, indicating that he understands the ship’s departure procedures and administration.

“However, the defendant allegedly chose to work through an unofficial agency and still departed even though there was a difference in the ship’s name in the employment agreement,” he said.

The prosecutors assessed that Fandi assisted in the process of transferring the goods and never reported the presence of the illegal cargo. During the voyage to Indonesia, the ship even lowered its flag to avoid suspicion.

“In principle, the public prosecutor remains with the criminal charges (death penalty) that have been previously submitted,” said the prosecutor.
