Prosecutor rejects Iwik's dossiers

YOGYAKARTA: Local police will have to work harder to solve the August slaying of journalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin after the provincial prosecutors office returned their dossier on Dwi Sumaji, the suspected killer.

The prosecutors office announced yesterday the dossier was incomplete, but did not give details.

"The dossier on the suspect Dwi Sumaji was incomplete. So, we released a p-18 letter, which says the documents fail to meet requirements," said Soeparman, deputy chief of Yogyakarta prosecutors office.

Police arrested Dwi Sumaji, or Iwik, a driver for a travel agent on Oct. 21. The manner of arrest was later harshly criticized because it reportedly violated procedures. The police, for instance, gave Iwik alcohol drinks until he passed out and later promised him wealth if he confessed to killing the journalist.

Fuad, better known as Udin, was a reporter at Yogyakarta's Bernas daily. He was attacked by unidentified thugs on Aug. 13 at his home in Bantul regency, near Yogyakarta.

Yesterday, Udin's wife, Marsiyem, met for the first time the suspected killer. Marsiyem, the main witness in the case, had earlier said that Iwik did not match her recollection of the man she opened the door to the night of the attack. (23/ste)
