Pros and Cons of Converting Petrol Motorcycles to Electric: Only Suitable for a Hobby?
JAKARTA - Converting electric motorcycles in Indonesia has its own market, namely among enthusiasts. For them, turning a petrol motorcycle into an electric one is not just about supporting government targets, but about being environmentally friendly and the pleasure of riding.
Bambang Setiawan Yudistira, or Ibeng, an electric motorcycle activist from EV Holic, revealed that the main advantage of converted motorcycles lies in the quality of the geometry and mechanics of the donor motorcycle, which has been proven over decades.
“If it’s about the comfort of the vehicle and so on, I prefer converted motorcycles over new electric ones. Because in terms of geometry, mechanics, and the like, these motorcycles have been proven over a long time. So when used, they are indeed proven comfortable,” Ibeng told Kompas.com recently.
Unlike petrol motorcycles that are flexible for long distances, converted motorcycles often face battery space issues, especially for scooter types.
“The space for the battery isn’t large in scooters. It only fits 20 Ampere Hours (Ah) back then. And under the seat, there’s no more luggage space; it’s all for the battery,” said Ibeng.
Ibeng provided a stark comparison between fuel efficiency and electricity on the same motorcycle.
“The range is only about 50 kilometres for one charge. Whereas before on this motorcycle, 1 litre could do about 50 kilometres too,” he said.
This means that to cover 100 km, users must manage charging quite tediously because the charging time is not short.
Not to mention the conversion costs.
The government did provide subsidies at one point, but they still don’t cover most of the expenses to convert a petrol motorcycle to electric.
With all its advantages and disadvantages, Ibeng assesses that conversion is currently more sensible as a hobby vehicle for those who already have another main vehicle.
“In my opinion, it’s not suitable for people who consider the motorcycle as an investment. Many people see motorcycles as one of their investments, right? If they need money, just sell it,” he explained.
Ibeng added that this conversion scheme will only feel successful if it targets owners who already have an idle motorcycle unit in their garage.
“This conversion programme can succeed if it’s for people who already have the capital and it’s not being used,” said Ibeng.
In conclusion, converted motorcycles offer a solid “soul” and riding comfort for an enthusiast, but users must be prepared to compromise with the loss of luggage function, limited range, and a drastic drop in resale value.
