Proposed parking fee hike

From Koran Tempo

The majority of the factions in the Jakarta City Council have rejected a plan by the city administration to raise parking rates by 200 percent, saying the proposed hike does not come at an opportune time as the parking management agency, BP Parkir, needs revamping and restructuring, and also because parking areas still need to be put in order.

As a Jakarta resident, I wish to express my great appreciation for the way the honorable city councillors think of parking affairs in Jakarta. It is really unfair to compare the parking fees in Jakarta with those in New York and the world's other metropolises.

It is really a shame that our government executives only look for references for things that will benefit them, and never try to find any references from the world's metropolises when things are much better there than here.

In transportation, for example, are our transportation services humane, safe and comfortable? In this context, references can be taken from other countries to spur improvements in this area.

Regarding the proposed parking fee hike, the City Council can, for example, work with a credible non-governmental organization to find out the wealth of BP Parkir officials before requesting that the management of BP Parkir be revamped and restructured as a prerequisite for a parking fee hike.
