Proposed parking fee hike<\/p>\n

The majority of the factions in the Jakarta City Council have
\nrejected a plan by the city administration to raise parking rates
\nby 200 percent, saying the proposed hike does not come at an
\nopportune time as the parking management agency, BP Parkir, needs
\nrevamping and restructuring, and also because parking areas still
\nneed to be put in order.<\/p>\n
As a Jakarta resident, I wish to express my great appreciation
\nfor the way the honorable city councillors think of parking
\naffairs in Jakarta. It is really unfair to compare the parking
\nfees in Jakarta with those in New York and the world's other
\nmetropolises.<\/p>\n
It is really a shame that our government executives only look
\nfor references for things that will benefit them, and never try
\nto find any references from the world's metropolises when things
\nare much better there than here.<\/p>\n
In transportation, for example, are our transportation
\nservices humane, safe and comfortable? In this context,
\nreferences can be taken from other countries to spur improvements
\nin this area.<\/p>\n
Regarding the proposed parking fee hike, the City Council can,
\nfor example, work with a credible non-governmental organization
\nto find out the wealth of BP Parkir officials before requesting
\nthat the management of BP Parkir be revamped and restructured as
\na prerequisite for a parking fee hike.<\/p>\n
