Profile of Michael Bambang Hartono, Djarum Boss and BCA Owner Who Passed Away in Singapore
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Owner of the cigarette company PT Djarum, Michael Bambang Hartono, passed away on Thursday (19/3/2026). The man affectionately known as Michael Hartono departed in Singapore at 13:15 local time. The news of his death was confirmed by PT Djarum’s Corporate Communication Manager, Budi Darmawan. Michael’s passing marks the end of a long journey for one of Indonesia’s most influential conglomerates. Together with his younger brother, Robert Budi Hartono, he built a business group that began in the kretek cigarette industry and expanded into a cross-sector conglomerate with ownership in banking, electronics, property, and digital infrastructure. Here is the profile of Michael Bambang Hartono. Michael once studied at the Faculty of Economics at Diponegoro University in 1959. However, he had to return to Kudus after his father passed away in 1963. This event became a pivotal moment in his life. Together with his brother, Robert Budi Hartono, he continued the family business, which was facing significant pressures at the time, including a factory fire that disrupted company operations. During this phase, the Hartono brothers began reorganising the Djarum business, modernising production, and expanding the market. The company began expanding its export market while increasing production capacity. Another strategic step was taken through business diversification. In 1975, the Djarum business group entered the electronics sector through the Polytron brand. Expansion then continued into the plantation sector, property, digital infrastructure, and telecommunications tower business. This diversification strengthened the Hartono business group’s position in facing industry cycle changes while opening new sources of growth beyond the core tobacco business.
