Profile of Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah, Head of KPAI who Passed Away
JAKARTA – Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah, Chairwoman of the Indonesian Commission for Child Protection (KPAI), passed away at Fatmawati Hospital in Jakarta on Sunday, 1 March 2026. The sad news was confirmed by KPAI Commissioner Kawiyan on Sunday afternoon.
Kawiyan described Margaret Aliyatul as an extraordinary and caring leader. “I express deep condolences because she was our leader, she was very wise and caring, with an exceptional vision for child protection,” said Kawiyan when contacted.
According to the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) website, Margaret Aliyatul Maimunah was born in Jombang on 11 May 1978. In addition to serving as Chairwoman of KPAI, she was also the General Chair of Fatayat Nahdlatul Ulama (NU).
Margaret received her secondary education at Pondok Pesantren Denanyar Jombang, attending from junior secondary school through senior secondary school. She later pursued a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies at the University of Indonesia, followed by a doctorate in Government Science at IPDN Jakarta.
She was actively involved in organisations both during her pesantren education and university years. Before assuming the role of General Chair of Fatayat NU, she previously served as Deputy Coordinator of the Economic Division and General Secretary of Fatayat NU.
She was subsequently appointed as KPAI Commissioner for the 2017-2022 period before being elected General Chair of KPAI for the 2022-2027 term. She was also affiliated with the Women Research Institute (WRI), an organisation focused on research and advocacy on women’s issues.
