Probe against shoe company

BOGOR (JP): The Bogor Office of the Ministry of Manpower has
promised to investigate an incident at PT Truba Factory Shoes in
which a female worker had a miscarriage after she was forced to
stand in the sun as a punishment.

"We cannot tolerate such punishments. It's not ethical,"
said Oon Suwono, one of the office's officials, as quoted by
Business Indonesia.

He said the company should have issued either written or oral
warnings to workers who had violated the factory's regulations,
instead of ordering them to stand in the sun.

"We will soon summon the company's executives for questioning
in connection with the incident," Oon said.

Earlier this weekend the female worker, Rosidah, 29, filed a
complaint with police.

Rosidah said she and some other female employees had been
ordered to stand in the sun as a punishment for not coming in
for work several days earlier.

Rosidah, a mother of three, was two months pregnant when the
company handed down the punishment. She fainted after standing in
the sun for only 15 minutes. A doctor who examined her later told
her that she had miscarried. (bas)
