Prisoners need reading material

MADIUN, East Java: The demand for reading material is increasing among Madiun Penitentiary inmates, who are complaining about their unattractive library and its substandard collection.

Head librarian at the Madiun Public Library Suparminto told the Antara news agency that his staff has been trying to meet demands by dispatching mobile libraries to the prison.

The library signs out some 20 books every week. It currently has a collection of 8,056 non-fiction and fiction books.

"Reading is good recreation for the inmates," prison spokesman Joehono said. (swe)
