Prices of bird’s-eye chillies and garlic in Cianjur Regency, West Java, rose on Wednesday, 4 March. This was likely due to reduced supply triggered by weather conditions.

According to data from the local Dinas Koperasi UMKM Perdagangan dan Perindustrian (Diskumdagin) monitoring in five traditional markets, the commodities whose prices rose include honan garlic. Prices previously ranged around Rp36,600 per kg, rising to Rp37,600 per kg. Meanwhile, kating garlic rose from Rp43,500 per kg to Rp44,750 per kg.

Prices also rose for red bird’s-eye chillies. Prices originally ranged around Rp80,800 per kg, rising to Rp82,400 per kg.

Green bird’s-eye chillies, which previously ranged around Rp49,400 per kg, rose to Rp52,200 per kg.

‘Prices of various necessities are still fluctuating. Some commodities tend to rise, such as garlic and bird’s-eye chillies,’ said Ivan Feriadi Rahman, Head of the Trade Division of Diskumdagin, Cianjur Regency, on Wednesday (4 March).

Ivan explained that the price fluctuations of several commodities, some of which are rising, are influenced by several factors. The main factor is likely the still-high demand from the public for several commodities.

‘Additionally, the recent weather conditions have been quite extreme. For some commodities, weather with high intensity greatly affects distribution,’ he said.

One of the measures to anticipate now, according to Ivan, is the potential surge in demand that will have a major impact on prices, especially ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah.

‘We continue to maintain cross-sector coordination to control prices and supply in the field. God willing, we will monitor Cianjur to keep it safe,’ he concluded. (H-2)
