Jakarta — President Prabowo Subianto has called for fuel consumption reduction measures as part of the government’s proactive response to global economic uncertainty. Among the options under consideration is the implementation of work-from-home (WFH) policies to reduce energy consumption.

“Of course, we must now take proactive steps—we must implement fuel consumption savings. We cannot assume that whatever happens, we will be safe,” Prabowo said during a Full Cabinet Session at the State Palace on Friday, 13 March 2026.

The President explained that geopolitical dynamics in Europe and the Middle East could potentially trigger rising global energy prices. The government is concerned that such increases could drive up food prices, necessitating early mitigation measures.

According to Prabowo, the government has already secured several essential food supplies. However, in the energy sector, efficiency efforts remain necessary to reduce dependence on fuel consumption.

As a comparison, the President cited Pakistan’s conservation measures during its energy crisis. The Pakistani government has implemented various conservation policies, including WFH arrangements for up to 50 per cent of public and private sector employees and reducing the working week to four days.

Pakistan has also undertaken other efficiency measures including salary cuts for state officials, restrictions on government vehicle use, reduced fuel consumption for government vehicles, and suspension of certain government spending such as vehicle procurement, air conditioning units, and office furniture.

The government has also limited foreign visits using state funds and reduced budgets for ceremonial activities.

Prabowo believes these policies could inform the Indonesian government’s development of appropriate efficiency measures.

“This is merely an example. My point is that we could study this matter over several days. We must also pursue fuel consumption savings,” the President said.

He noted that Indonesia’s experience during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated that remote working arrangements could enhance efficiency whilst significantly reducing fuel consumption.
