Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is deeply concerned about thuggery carried out by civil society organisations (ormas) that is disrupting the business climate in the country. A series of complaints have also emerged regarding investment being hampered by ormas-related thuggery.

This was disclosed directly by State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi. According to him, Prabowo and his cabinet members are extremely vexed by acts of thuggery carried out in the name of civil organisations.

"Frankly, we also feel the unease, because there should be no acts of thuggery, especially those wrapped up in certain organisations, carried out in the name of civil society organisations. This precisely fails to create a conducive business climate. So the President and the government are truly alarmed," Prasetyo said while speaking with journalists at the Presidential Palace Complex in Central Jakarta on Friday (9 May 2025).

Prabowo has coordinated directly with the Attorney General's Office and the National Police to find a way out of this problem, particularly to ensure guidance for civil organisations so they do not disrupt the investment climate, security, and public order.

Prasetyo, who also serves as Presidential Spokesperson, stated that should any criminal offences be found in the thuggery practices of civil organisations, the government would not hesitate to enforce the law.

"If criminal acts are indeed found, then sanctions will follow. Moreover, if the level of criminal offence is deemed intolerable, then the possibility cannot be ruled out — it must be evaluated," Prasetyo said.

**Government Plans to Form Task Force**

Previously, Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Budi Gunawan stated that the government would establish an Integrated Task Force for Handling Thuggery and Civil Organisations. The task force will provide guidance to problematic civil organisations.

The task force will comprise the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police, and all relevant agencies under a single command. Budi Gunawan also conveyed that the existence of problematic civil organisations has clearly disrupted the investment climate and eroded business confidence in Indonesia in recent times. As a result, the government's development targets have been obstructed.

"Their actions have become a serious obstacle to the development targets set out by President Prabowo Subianto. Therefore, we must act firmly and proportionately," Budi Gunawan stressed in his statement.

He also declared that the government would not hesitate to take firm action against all forms of thuggery and civil organisation activities that unsettle the public and potentially disrupt investment and public order.
